The Truth About Publishing: What It Really Takes to Go from Manuscript to Market
Wilder Creek Publishing exists to bring publishing back to its original meaning:
quality, credibility, and longevity.
Because uploading a file isn’t publishing — it’s merely selling.
True publishing means stewardship of story, design, and discovery.
Considerations For International Authors Publishing in the United States
The United States remains the world’s largest book market and its most influential cataloging hub. Every major distributor, library system, and search database traces back to U.S. records — Bowker for ISBNs, the Library of Congress for cataloging, and the U.S. Copyright Office for proof of authorship.
For international authors, publishing into that ecosystem can open the world. But it also introduces unique challenges in registration, taxation, and visibility.
The Problem with Direct Self-Publishing
Non-U.S. authors often use platforms such as Amazon KDP or IngramSpark to reach American readers. While those systems allow global uploads, they do not make the author a U.S. publisher of record.
Without a U.S. publishing entity, a foreign author cannot:
Obtain a Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) through the PCN program.
Register a U.S. ISBN prefix in their own name.
File copyright directly through a U.S. business channel (without a U.S. address).
Appear as a recognized publisher of record in Books In Print or the U.S. ISBN registry.
That means that while the book is available for sale online, it does not enter the professional American publishing infrastructure — the catalogs used by libraries, schools, and independent bookstores.
The Advantage of a U.S. Publisher
Publishing under a verified U.S. imprint solves every one of those problems at once.
Through a U.S. publisher, such as Wilder Creek Publishing, international authors gain full access to the same systems as domestic publishers:
ISBN assignment under a U.S. publishing prefix.
LCCN eligibility through the Library of Congress PCN program.
U.S. copyright filing and certificate under the author’s name.
Global metadata distribution through Bowker, Ingram, and Nielsen.
This structure allows a book written anywhere in the world to appear as a professionally published American edition — fully recognized, catalogued, and legally protected.
Legal and Tax Simplicity
For international authors, publishing through a U.S. imprint can raise concerns about taxes and paperwork. Wilder Creek Publishing was structured to make that process clear, transparent, and compliant — without adding extra burdens.
When you publish with Wilder Creek, you remain the direct recipient of all royalties.
Distributors such as Amazon KDP or IngramSpark pay you directly. Wilder Creek does not collect or disburse royalties, so you do not file U.S. taxes through us.
However, you are still considered the beneficial owner of income earned from U.S. sales. That means:
You will complete a Form W-8BEN with each distributor to confirm your status as a non-U.S. taxpayer and to apply your country’s tax-treaty rate (often 0–15%).
The distributor — not Wilder Creek — will handle any required withholding or reporting.
Each year, you’ll receive Form 1042-S from the distributor showing how much was paid and how much (if any) U.S. tax was withheld.
You’ll include that information in your home-country tax filing as foreign income, using the 1042-S to claim a foreign-tax credit so you are not taxed twice.
You will not need to file a U.S. tax return unless:
You wish to reclaim withheld funds; or
You have other U.S.-sourced income.
If you ever do file in the United States, non-resident authors automatically receive a two-month extension (to June 15) for their federal return.
In summary:
Distributors such as Amazon and Ingram handle compliance directly with you.
You, as the author, simply include the income in your normal tax filing at home.
Publishing in the United States should not complicate your life — it should expand your reach. Wilder Creek Publishing’s role is to make the structure simple, compliant, and author-friendly from the start.
A True U.S. Presence
Publishing with Wilder Creek gives international authors more than an ISBN — it provides professional credibility.
Your book enters the same databases, archives, and catalog systems as titles from major U.S. publishers. It becomes visible to libraries, schools, wholesalers, and retailers worldwide under an authentic American imprint.
For global authors, that’s the difference between access and acceptance.
A retailer upload places your book online.
A publisher’s imprint places it in the record.
